Q1: What is the Project Scope / What is trying to be solved?
The AFDRS will replace the current system developed in the 1960s. By using the latest science, data and technology – and a better understanding of community needs– the AFDRS will improve public safety and reduce the impacts of bushfires.
Q2: What will be available to the EM community / decision makers at the end of your project?
All current fire danger rating products will be replaced with the new AFDRS, including ratings displayed on fire agency websites, roadside signs, etc.
Q3: How will the EM Sector access the results?
Existing delivery channels will continue (agency websites, Bureau of Meteorology website and spatial data feeds, media, etc). There will also be a new dedicated Fire Danger Viewer website.
Q4: What are the main hurdles faced in completing your Project?
This is the most significant change to fire danger since the 1960s and has flow on impacts for policy, decision making, and fire operations across many areas of government and industry. Completing this change in a timely manner is the biggest challenge.
Q5: What input data / work do you need from jurisdictions?
Through AFDRS governance arrangements that are already in place we are consulting with jurisdictions on the design and implementation of the system, from technical data such as fuel type and fire history mapping, all the way through to changes in policy and legislation.
