Geoscience Australia online elevation data system has been a trusted source of information since 2016. The system is a collaboration with the Intergovernmental Committee on Surveying and Mapping (ICSM) and forms the ICSM Elvis infrastructure. Thanks to some hard work from our teams, we’re making ICSM Elvis more valuable to more users, with the addition of three new five-metre resolution elevation models that each cover an entire catchment area.
The first three catchments with this regional elevation coverage are the Bellinger River (North coast NSW), MacLeay River (North coast NSW) and the Georges River (Sydney), providing easier access to data for more efficient planning, research and decision-making by government, industry, and research communities.
The digital elevation models show these catchments in new detail, allowing us to visualise water flow at regional scale and assist to determine the potential movements of fires. All invaluable data to help manage water movement and bushfire events.
These catchment products are limited to areas along the east coast where the necessary data is available.
Each catchment is delivered as a single dataset made up of hundreds of individual input data from the Elvis system, with metadata that enables users to identify and review the original datasets the catchment was built from.
Keep an eye out more catchment-sized models at this scale over the coming months.
